Reshaping Hemophilia B Care Through Gene Therapy

Versiti Blood Research Institute

When the weather starts warming up, you’ll most likely find Cody on his bike, exploring the countless trails that trace our state like veins. Despite living with Hemophilia B since birth, Cody hasn’t let this blood disorder slow him down. However, pedaling down an off-beaten path holds much more risk when you have Hemophilia B. Even a simple fall or knee scrape holds risks.

This rare blood disorder stems from a Factor 9 deficiency, a protein that helps clotting. Without Factor 9, a patient may succumb to all sorts of health complications, from arthritis to internal bleeding. Cody himself has endured several ankle surgeries due to repeated bleeding. And despite only being 39 years old, Cody has advanced arthritis.

Yet, none of these setbacks seems to keep Cody from enjoying life. Ever since childhood, Cody’s can-do attitude has equipped him to take charge of his Hemophilia B, and that includes administering his own infusions to keep his Factor 9 levels in check.
